What is the 24V max Wattage of WS-8-150AC?

Fri Mar 08, 2019 9:30 am

What is the max safe wattage for the WS-8-150AC switch? I found out that the WS-12-250AC is around 160W (current version) and 106W (older un-modded version) when running all ports at 24V. Does this same limitation exist in the 8 port switch?

I am planning to add some more APs to a tower and I will be replacing a full TS-5-POE switch with a WS-8-150AC for a total of 7 ports powering 24V devices.

4 Prismstation5AC (max consumption 10W each)
1 Rocket5AC-Prism (max consumption 9.5W)
1 PowerbeamAC500 (max consumption 8.5W)
1 RocketM2 (max consumption 8W)
Estimated total max consumption = 66W

According to the box switch was made in 2016.

OK so the WS-12-250-AC has a 250W power supply which is TOTAL power

Since we offer both 48V and 48VH POE options and we were the first to be able to power airFIBER radios we assume some ports will be used to power 48V devices.

There is a step down power supply on the board to change 48V to 24V. Early models of WS-12 units had a limit of 106 watts of 24V which was more than enough to power most radios on the market at that time.

The WS-12-250-AC has (4) ports of 48VH so if someone was powering (4) AF24 or AF5 radios thats 200 watts there and the switch needs upto 12 watts for itself so 212 watts of TOTAL power so even though the 24V power supply is rated at 106(old) / 160(new) they could not provide that much 24V power as the TOTAL power limit of 250 watts is insufficient.

Now with all that said

The WS-8-150-AC has a TOTAL power limit of 150 watts and the ability to deliver a max of 108(old) / 140(new) watts of 24V but that is MAX and I would not recommend pushing any power supply at MAX constantly. Now newer WS-8-150-AC boards have an upgraded 24V power supply rated at 140 watts MAX.

The WS-8-150-DC has a TOTAL power limit of 150 watts and the ability to deliver a max of 90 watts of 24V but that is MAX and I would not recommend pushing any power supply at MAX constantly.

Your switch is older unit so 24V power supply is rated at 108 watts (MAX)

Thanks for the prompt response. This information is very helpful as I find I use these switches mostly for 24V units and not 48V. Knowing the max or safe 24V wattage is much appreciated.

Based on your response it appears I will be OK to run the proposed configuration on my older WS-8-150Ac.

Did you actually start running that setup, Sbyrd? Any troubles?

Yes I installed it a few days ago and so far things are running well. I have 7 of the 8 ports doing 24V PoE and total power usage seems to hover around the 50-65 watt area.

Now keep in mind if that unit does any unexpected rebooting RMA it at once as that unit is one of the "possible" units with defective 3V CAPs.

We have extended the warranty of those CAPs for the life of the switch provided it is not damaged in another way.

Thanks for the reminder as I have RMA'd at least 2 of the WS-8-150ACs before for that exact same issue.
