FTTH switches

Sat May 30, 2015 5:27 pm

We're moving into FTTH market. It's actually really difficult to find a decent switch that has either 8/12/16/24 and 48 SFP/SFP+ ports.

8 port SFP 100/1000 Mbps + 1 port SFP+/XFP 10 Gbps
12 port SFP 100/1000 Mbps + 1 port SFP+/XFP 10 Gbps
16 port SFP 100/1000 Mbps + 2 port SFP+/XFP 10 Gbps
24 port SFP 100/1000 Mbps + 2 port SFP+/XFP 10 Gbps
48 port SFP 100/1000 Mbps + 2 port SFP+/XFP 10 Gbps

We have found nice SFP modules and CPE unit (fiber to RJ45 mediaconverter) but need switches we can rely on and now is working for a decent price (Not Cisco/HP/Juniper prices).

A good thing would be for you to post other existing models and the best prices you can buy them for like below:

EXAMPLE:
BrandX - 12 port SFP - 2 SFP+ - $555.55

This is what I have found so far....

BlackBox LGB5128A http://www.blackbox.com/Store/Detail.as ... t/LGB5128A $1500
Netgear ProSafe M4100-12GF (GSM7212F) 12 Port SFP Fiber Gigabit Managed Switch 10/100/1000 Mbps $700

Edge-Core (http://www.edge-core.com) has a range of models: http://edge-core.com/selector.asp (chose Gigabit fiber). $1200 (ECS4510-28F)

Of course I can go Cisco or HP, but they're to expensive for low priced FTTH deployment....
Edge-Core is a choice but I don't know the quality of their products and if you choose Layer 2 only, they only have 1 device available "pure fiber".

Not much to choose from. Anyone knows of other brand/models ?

So at the moment I will probably choose the Netgear....

So that Netgear is 12 shared which means you can chose to use the SFP or Copper port and the copper port has 802.3af.

No SFP+ ports, is SFP+ up link a requirement?

But you can get that for $470 from NewEgg

That is is a pretty good price. Where do you plan to install these switches? Is Size important?

Maybe explain where and how you would deploy them as I am not in the FTTH game as of yet.

Chris,

In FTTH deployment I don't need RJ45 ports. We're deploying pure fiber, not PDS cabling. So if I go with the Netgear Switch it's only because it's cheaper than the Edge-Core. I would prefer the Edge-Core but it has 22 SPF ports and that's a lot for situations where it's not needed.
Size don't matter. We will probably install 19" enclosure. Could be nice with smaller size switches (8 and 12 port). Just add 19" ears for it....

Uplink ports with 10 Gbps is needed. We will probably sell 100/100 Mbps and 1/1 Gbps connections.

Chris, the choice I have for SFP fiber switches is almost nonexisting. We will probably install these switches in outdoor enclosures, basements etc. Do you think a Netgear switch is suitable for that ?

Your switches are great. They're not running hot. Can stand the harsh environment and is also loaded with nice features and more can be added....

Of course a FTTH switch is a little differen than a WISP switch. No PoE is needed, ports are SFP based...
