Multi PoE input 1 output switch

Thu Mar 10, 2016 12:25 pm

I posted this on UBNT's forum, but this would be really helpful in our situation and I suspect others in more urban/suburban areas too. http://community.ubnt.com/t5/Business-T ... 844#M49078

Basically in order to try and cover multiple units with 1 CPE or a PtP this is the scenario:

I have townhomes that are 3/4/5 wide with no outside power available.

What I am doing is giving each customer 1 poe and they provide their own router. The combination of switch and CPE means I need at least 1amp (so 1x 1amp PoE or 2x .5amp or some other combination) outside which runs to a box with PoE splitters (http://find-a-poe.com/product/1-Port-Passive-PoE-Injector-Gigabit-or-10100/). I power a 260GS and AC radio off the 24v on pairs 4,5/7,8 coming from the customers and plug their data pairs into the switch.

I've just started testing this and here are my concerns:
1. You sort of have to supply 1Amp PoEs in case you only have 1 active customer in the building or someone unplugs their poe/looses power. Its really close but I don't think 12w could handle the switch and CPE but I haven't tried it.
2. Messy. I wish there was a switch that could accept multiple PoE "ins" and had one "out".
3. I haven't found anything other than the 260GS that has the voltage range to support 24v on the barrel plug and the traffic shaping isn't very good so I've had to set up pcq queues on the router at the other end.

We had a similar discussion here a while back.
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=640

In that thread I had an idea to use the AGW but since then the ER-X has come out and might be an alternative.

I do this. I use very similar devices for both
A) I just need more power
B) I have power coming from multiple sources

For A, check this post out: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1510

For B, I do the same thing but I put RJ45 ends on the orange and green and plug into the switch. Limits the clients to 100Mbps, but that's never an issue.

I only have a few of the 'B' option out there, but I purchased a few of these:

so I run a normal CPE feed in and pull the power feeds out (blue and brown).
