10 GigE Switches ?

Thu Dec 17, 2015 9:35 am

I just received a super good price promo from Level 3 on fiber service. They are now basing pricing on this on a 10 GigE fiber drop, with service in increments of 1 Gig.
Pricing is comparable to what we are currently paying for 1/2 that amount of speed.

Looks like we are now going to have to look at getting 10 GigE connection equipment in the near future !

Just saying .................

Hey what kind of pricing are you getting from Level 3?

Can't shoot you the price list, as it is proprietary, but, I can say that we are currently paying $1000. a month for 200 Mbps. Under the new "promo", I can get 5 times that speed for double the cost! If you are a Level 3 customer, might want to contact them, limited time offer!

Drawback is 10GigE connection, in increments of 1 Gig speeds !

What are they charging for the 10G port?

I take it $2K for bandwidth is on top of the port fee?

No port fee that I am aware of! We currently aren't paying any port fees. Most REAL fiber providers don't charge a monthly port fee, just the Telco companies, because they can get away with it under the Telco tariffs. There is a one time install fee, I would assume?

I have Level 3 and they charge me transport fees and port fees and then bandwidth on top of that.

My first 100Mbps cost me $1250/m with 1 year term ($1000+$250 roof access fee).

anyway, I get per/Mbps with no port or transport fees from my upstream right now. Got a quote from Zayo a few weeks ago for 1G (2 SFP or SFP+ ports included) with no extra fees. Zayo will do 1G for about $1700/m.

I don't need 10GigE for this though..

I think I've said it before. But a switch with SFP+ would be pretty sweet. I understand the demand probably isn't there but I'd love to use them in the core as we move past 1Gb.

So @sirhc now the demand is coming. Those SFP+ switches would be nice for FTTH deployments :-)

Hopefully we will soon see an EdgeRouter with SFP+ ports (several I hope) in near future....

I'd be all for SFP+ also. Looked at L3 10Gbps port line quotes like Wayne, they are far below what we're paying currently, and definitely worth shopping for a solid 10Gbps switch.
