Just a little concerned about blowing out the ethernet port on my laptop. Is there a "best practice" method for connecting to these switches with my laptop?

Most laptops are transformer isolated, as cat5 typically builds up some kind of DC bias anyway, but you can use a USB Ethernet NIC such as this one: http://bit.ly/2vNNwEF

I'm not saying it's best practice to plug your laptop into a live 48VH port, but I've done it unintentionally and haven't smelled any smoke.

There is an LED on every port that is Green for 24V, Blinking Green for 24VH, Red for 48V, Blinking Red for 48VH.

Why not just NOT plug into a port that has POE turned on at all? Rule of thumb if there is a light on the empty port that means do not use this port.

A serial cable and at less learn the commands to shut down PoE on a port if your not confortable with CLI.
