Julian -
Ohh crap - Sadly, I can't share the password with you...
Please reset to defaults.
We reset to defaults a number of times and the problem remained - so it's probably going to stay.
What does "noggin" means?
FCS / CRC errors
Re: FCS / CRC errors
alrighty, we have her defaulted, getting the traffic snake vlan set up to see if we can duplicate under solely traffic load; power load will come later
'noggin' refers to my brain, it is also a very old term for a small flask containing alcohol, from whence the term derives its diminutive/pejorative connotations
1/31: necessary patch cables have arrived and i was able to get a 1036 working to use for line rate traffic; 1036 was wasted effort as problem immediately showed once all ports were populated, FCS errors at a rate of 30-50% on ports 13-24. Wait one for full analysis, am currently soldering the test point loops on so I can get a good solid look. This 100% would have showed up on Chris's test station, as well
1/31 PM update: Bad secondary clock, this goes in the W column for Chris, that was the only thing he thought it'd be. as far as why it's bad.. thermal drift? age? tolerance too wide for the application? i dunno, these aren't the exact part i order, but a part that is labeled as 25mhz oscillator should probably read 25mhz on the frequency counter *all* the time.

Re: FCS / CRC errors
Thanks, Julian.
I wish I could understand 10% of what you wrote...
I get that some of your language is simply joyous and full of humor and slang -- I really do wish I could understand it and enjoy it..
I've only been in this country for 20 years or so -- so much more to learn I guess...
I think you are saying that there's a hardware problem with the switch?
Anyways - the question mark at the end suggests that you are asking me something -- but I have no idea what is the question.
=========
I'll appreciate a bit dryer use of language - at the risk of being boring - at least I'll understand your posts.
Thanks,
Yahel.

Re: FCS / CRC errors
I will do my best to consider my audience - Yes, these are attempts at humor and spreading the joy i feel alongside successful failure analysis, and nothing makes me happier than sharing my exuberance.
To business, now, these are my main points:
I was able, with a specific configuration, to duplicate what you were seeing. https://photos.app.goo.gl/tmGSr6WRjqBx6VBA9
I was also able to confirm which component was responsible by replacing the suspected component (secondary reference clock, a 25mhz oscillator, component reference designator Y2) and observing FCS errors no longer propagate in this configuration.
The part I did replace differed from the factory part in appearance and function.
We now have, and did not before, a fully functional WS-26-500-DC.

Re: FCS / CRC errors
Great - wonderful news.
I have 3 other identical switches, from the same batch, new in their boxes, sitting on the shelf as spares - am I to assume they would suffer the same problem?
To remind you, this unit was also new from the box when it exhibited the problem...
What are the next steps ..
Thanks,
Yahel.

Re: FCS / CRC errors
Yahel;
This unit was not new, sir, it has had extensive rework performed after an incident which caused total failure, as documented above.
From their internal labeling, it's still under warranty at ISP technologies. From the conversation I had with their proprietor on this particular unit, this is not something he would typically screen, so I cannot attest to the status of your other units. From the factory, no, this problem will not present. When ISP technologies works on them, they put a silver QR label on the underside of the unit, if you want to take a look on your others.
as far as screening your other spares -- https://photos.app.goo.gl/JzxfMy3pJd2yPxG29 is the VLAN configuration that made it immediately apparent, for me. I additionally needed patch cables bridging each vlan to the next. I could not launch the GUI without multiple counters incrementing in this configuration.
Next step is I get you your switch shipped back to you, sir, my invoice belongs elsewhere. I'll need you to confirm shipping address, please email julian@netonix.com to do so.
Thanks,
Julian

Re: FCS / CRC errors
Julian - thanks for all these details.
"ISP technologies" ?
I've never heard of them - do you mean ISP-supplies?
We do buy lots of gear from ISP-supplies (https://www.ispsupplies.com/)
We may have purchased this batch of switches from them - we might be able to track this down.
It was years ago -- I'm not saying it's new in term of age, just that I took it out of the box myself, off the shelf of spares -- so it was never used anywhere (to the best of my knowledge).
"From the conversation I had with their proprietor" -- who's that - I get a sense we are again talking past each other -- I don't quite get your language.
We only purchase new units!
"A silver QR label on the underside of the unit," - what?!
Do you mean to say someone repaired these units?
I'll check with my team - but I am not aware of any unit we ever repaired outside of sending them back to you - Netonix!
I'm starting to think that were sold used/repaired units - any help tracking this down would be appreciated.
I'll have someone check for a Silver QR label on the other units, on Monday -- scary stuff.
Return shipping address - can I email you (is that you: julian@swginc.com )?
Thanks!

Re: FCS / CRC errors
ISP Technologies - This is a man, who I know.
ISP-supplies - no. this is a distributor, they're wav broadband now.
this is the label I'm referring to: https://photos.app.goo.gl/6yoTysJiA8AA2qFd6
Few scenarios could lead us here, best to reserve comment until we figure out which it is.
(is that you: julian@swginc.com )? No longer, sir
You should also now have tracking - via email - Be Well, Sir!
