new/computer illiterate installer, rj45 ends and crimper?

Sun Oct 23, 2016 8:50 pm

I have a new greenfield and I'm having a local handy-man do installs. He can do everything except put ends on. I think he could eventually learn the standard rj45 ends and crimper, but it will be very slow and a lot of bad crimps until then.

I've been looking at the Platinum EZ-RJ45 #100022 ends and matching crimper that lets you pass the wires through the end and double check them more easily.

Anyone else using these and have any commentary? Or an alternative with a similar advantage?

Chris/Netonix guys, any chance you are considering this type of rj45 end?

We have been using EZ-RJ45 for a while... love 'em. Putting on connectors is one of those skills that people that are good at it make it look easy. Some others of us need to start with a longer cable and a bunch of connectors... snip, strip, connector, fail test, curse, snip, strip, connector, fail test, curse, etc. until eventual success.

I've hired a satellite dish installer to do my installs. Currently I do the Cat5 crimps for him. I was also thinking of the EZ-RJ45s so he could handle that task too. There was a discussion on Facebook about the crimpers bending some of the EZ-RJ45 pins. I guess if you crimp it slowly it doesn't become a problem.

I also considered doing all the crimps, but then it's two trips to complete an install :/

I also considered doing 1 crimp for the pole, and then a shielded jack inside because they are easier to see and they are fixable. But that adds a lot of expense. I'd rather spend a minute testing the cable and the expense of replacing an end than spend $20 on hardware for an install.

Anyone found a <$1.60 price on the EZ-RJ45 ends?

When we hire a new installer.

We verbally quiz him for days on the pattern

Tang down with front of end pointed away from you.

Left to Right:

White Orange
Orange
White Green
Blue
White Blue
Green
White Brown
Brown

We then show him how to do several ends.

We then give him a bag of ends, a box of wire, crimp tool, dikes, and a utility knife then leave him practice putting on ends until his ends pass our inspection.

Problem solved.

Usually within 1-3 hours you have an employee who can install ends.

Thank you for saying the colors as 'White Orange' and not 'Orange White'!

I learned it as 'White Orange' and it throws me for a loop when anyone says it differently!
It's kinda like the alphabet song. I can do the ends without reciting it (done a BUNCH of them over the years), but I usually recite it a few times anyway when checking my work.

I always thought that you use in EEUU the other color code, T568B rather than T568A.

I always use T568B unless the site has existing, then match it.

Patch cables are almost universally T568B, so that's a better default at this point.

T568A wiring standard is more popular, which is always my choice.
