WS-26-400-AC CONNECTION PROBLEM

Three weeks ago we bought an WS-26-400-AC SWITCH from Syscom in Mexico. We replaced that switch in our communication site and since that we have received many reports from our costumers complaining about broken internet connection that we did not have with the old gigabyt switch. Yesterday after we download the firmware version 1.5.0rc2, and when we disabled today the STP option, our costumers are reporting to us and improvement in the service. In this switch we have connected our main link in port 1, which is and Ubiquiti AirFiber 5X, that is the one that fits into the switch 300 Mbps of internet service.

On the rest of the 9 ports that we are using in the switch we have Ubiquiti wireless links to different geographical locations around our repeater site, so our questions are:
1. What would be the right configuration on Flow Control for Port 1, for this kind of traffic in the port? Obey/generate/both?

2. What is the function of checking or unchecking the PS box in any port configuration?

3. What is the function of checking or unchecking the MC box in of any port configuration?

4. What is the right value of MTU, especially for port 1, which is the port that handles all the traffic?

5. What is the function of checking or unchecking the Iso box in of any port configuration?

6. What is the function of checking or unchecking the DS box in of any port configuration?

7. For this kind of high volume traffic we noticed under the STP configuration that we disabled there is and item named Priority, that it has for all the ports a default value of 128, in a range from 0 to 240?

8. Should we have enabled of disabled for the switch? We are wireless ISP. We need that our costumers have very fast internet access.

9. Under the tools section you have and option called "Port Bounce". We need to know what happens if the select that option for and especific port.

10. Also we noticed that in Port 1, which is our main traffic port, when we had the STP function enabled, we saw clearly in Port Details, under the first line of Receive Error Counters, thousands of Rx Drops. Then when we disabled this function, about nine hours ago, we had only 32 of Rx Drops.

11. Also on the Port Menu under Receive Error Counters we have 53 Rx Jabber and 908 Rx Filtered. We would like to know what does that mean.


Everything else looks fine.

On your forum you mention that we should not use ethernet protectors on Netonix PoE Switches, because them clamp the voltage on the data and power pairs. Right now we are using in our sites the ETH-SP from Ubiquiti Networks. What should we use in order to protect our radios and also the ports of the switch from ESD lining our searches.

Also we were searching for a user manual for the WS-26-400-AC and the couldn't find anything in the Forums. It would be very important to have and User Manual written for each model of switch what you have offer to us in order for us to have the tools to understand any issue that we need.

We recommend to your company to have a telephone support, because the type of service that we provide is very valuable for out costumers and they need our quick response, not to forums or 24 hours that we need the inmediate assistance.

We were about to lose many costumers because this issue that we mentioned at the begining and we couldn't get any help since last week from David Quezada, the Netonix Product Manager from Syscom Mexico, because he was out of the office.

Yesterday we finally spoke to him and he was not able to answer or solve any of our doubts. He gave us the email address of chris@netonix.com We've sent many e-mails to have asking for urgent help and at the moment we have not received any response from Chris, which is very disappointing to us, because we know that your product is excellent and that is the main reason why we bought it. We also, looking for urgent help, spoke to the people that purchases Netonix Switches in Syscom and they do not have any telephone number from Netonix.

This morning, looking for someone to solve our problem we sent many e-mails to chris@netonix.com begging for help, because we had many calls complaining about our internet service that we didn't have in the past which the old TL-SG1016 TP-LINK switch that we had installed in the site.

We also noticed that Syscom does not have the enough knowledge to give a detailed support of the configuration of this switches. We will ask you to past this comments to the Netonix owner in order for you to the support and care to the most valuable people, your costumers.

I'm copying all the comments in this forum to the owner of Syscom Mexico, Jorge Saat and David Quezada.

Finally you mention on the WISP Switch Spec Sheet that the STP have the firmware v2.0, is this actually available? and where can we find it?

Also we didn't receive any help from Chris. the only response that he sent was "If you continue to spam this email address our spam filter will determine you are spam and could block your email address.".

We do appreciated your time and help. Congratulation about the great features of the products that you have.

There are many posts on this forum about Flow Control. UBNT radios have an issue with Flow Control, they are working on the issue last I heard. If you do not fully understand how Flow Control works and the possible effects on a switch and if you run a large flat network you should Disable Flow Control.

If you move your mouse over the PS header a pop up balloon appears and says it is POE smart which you could search on the forums for answers about what it does.

All POE SMART does is check if there are any cross shorts in your cabling before applying POE power. It is useless if you turn the POE on for a port then plug in the cable as POE is already on at that point and if there is a cross shorted cable you will damage the switch.

Once again if you mouse over the header "MC" a balloon pops up which tells you this is how you enable Multicast for the port with the check box. Multicast is a network standard nothing different on our switch verses any other brand of switches or network equipment.

This is not a question about our switches or how to use them.

MTU is an Ethernet standard terminology which stands for Maximum Transmission Unit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_transmission_unit

Under most cases the MTU should be the same on all ports but under some configurations you may wish to set it differently on different ports especially ig segmenting traffic/ports with VLANs.

I would leave the MTU at the default of 1528 unless you want to pass jumbo frames or you are doing some sort of special packet encapsulation. Once again not sure how this is something we need to teach you as this is not specific to our switches but rather a standard, you should already understand what MTU is used for.

Once again if you mouse over the header it will say Port Isolation. This is also easily searchable on this forum. This is also pretty standard across many switches.

STP / RSTP is industry standards and they work exactly the same across all switch manufacturers.
STP is IEEE 802.D
RSTP is IEEE 802.1w

STP/RSTP work the same across all switches manufactures so they will interoperate with other manufactures. This is why it is called an industry STANDARD

Enable or Disable what? Are you asking about STP/RSTP? If so that would depend on your network design and needs.

Port bounce allows you to schedule turning off the POE power to a port to reboot a radio. Some radios need rebooted every now and then this simply allows you to schedule it automatically.

Enabling STP/RSTP on that port should not cause any difference in packet errors. My guess is it was coincidental to something else changing or happening on your network?

Once again these are standard Ethernet Errors reported on all Ethernet equipment. Possibly Google and read about them?

I think you get the idea and can search for what Rx Filtered means, once again these are INDUSTRY STANDARD Ethernet error counts and statistics.

Even UBNT Ethernet surge protectors do the same thing and clamp all 8 wires together which will damage our switches and their switches like the ToughSwitch and so on. 99% of damage WISPs encounter is not ESD or even surge damage but rather ground current from poor grounding practices. We also repair UBNT, MIMOSA, MikroTik and other equipment and we see the same damage to those pieces of equipment.

Personally I do not use a single Ethernet surge protector in my entire WISP and I lose less than 2 radios per year including customer and tower radios.

Read the posts above but the basics are as follow:
Tower ground rods must be bonded to electrical service ground rods HEAVY #2 wire.
I always add 1 or 2 “new” ground rods to older existing electrical services.

All of our switches use the exact same switch core and firmware and they all offer the same features. The primary difference between models is the type type and size of power supply, and what POE options are offered on what ports. All this information can be found on the web site under product descriptions.

We are a small $5 MILLION dollar a year company and do not have the resources to provide phone tech support.

You say you use Ubiquiti which is a $1 BILLION Dollar a year company and I do not think they offer phone tech support either and if they do now they did not when I used to be a UBNT Super User and they were at that time a public company doing $500 MILLION per year.

Besides all of your questions so far are simple questions that could be answered here in the forums with simple searches or they are regarding industry standards like STP / RSTP, or what is multicast?

I think you are talking about MSTP as we already support STP and have since the beginning. MSTP is a work in progress and is available in v1.4.9

Since you do not seem to understand STP / RSTP I am not sure you are ready for MSTP anyway?

You were sending email after email, one right after the other asking the same question over and over again which was you wanted phone support. We had already answered you that we offer support on the forums but you kept demanding a phone support call. See screen grab below of some of your email spams. We were being serious and truthful that our spam filter would eventually flag your email address as SPAM since you were sending the same email over and over and over again. *as seen in picture below*
