New WS-12-250-AC Switch Fan Keeps Turning Off

Wed Mar 20, 2024 5:36 pm

We recently purchased two WS-12-250-AC switches. On one of the switches, the fan keeps shutting off roughly every 10 minutes.

After about 6 minutes without the fan running, the CPU and PHY Temp reach 93C and then the fan will come back on. Once the CPU and PHY Temp cool to about 68C, the fan shuts off again and the sequence repeats.

Even when the temp is at 93C, the switch does not feel hot to the touch so I question whether the thermal reading is even accurate. However, it does seem strange that the fan keeps turning off.

The other switch is not having this problem. It maintains a consistent CPU and PHY temp of about 55C with the fan running consistently at about 5500-6500 RPM.

Is there any way I might be able to fix this problem myself without having to send it in for repair?

Thank you,
Ed

Ed

Are both of these switches running the same load/configuration?

Hi Dave,
no, these switches are running different configurations.

On the switch that is overheating, we're using PoE on 6 ports with the total power draw hanging between 64-74W.

On the switch that is behaving normally, we're using PoE on 3 ports with the total power draw hanging between 23-30W.
