WS-12-250-DC thinks it's an AC switch !!

Sat Jan 18, 2025 2:10 am

We have a switch that suffers an identity crisis.
It's a DC switch that reports it's an AC switch, and don't show all the DC-specific features.
I have upgraded it from 1.5.14 to 1.5.25 and it remains the same.
Naturally, reset to defaults was also attempted.

The switch seems to otherwise function perfectly.

Ideas how to clear this up?
Thanks!

Yahel.

MAC: EC:13:B2:81:C2:DA
How do I find the board's serial number?
Same goes for PS's serial - it thinks it's AC - so no details about the PS.

Board revision - F

Is there some way via command-line, perhaps, to do a hard-reset?
I'm happy to open it and do whatever, if you think that would help...

Thanks.

Open chassis

serial numbers on board and power supply.

Use proper size screwed driver and press firmly so as not to strip screw heads

Notice I edited your post and uploaded the file to the post using the upload attachment link below blue submit button.
It is better to upload pictures as a year from now your link will go dead and this thread and conversation will be missing the needed pics most times making it useless.

Now if you got to RMA portal and punch in MAC: EC:13:B2:81:C2:DA you get info on switch:
Model: WS-12-250-DC
Mfg Date: 02/21/2017 (7 Years old)
Date Ordered: 05/13/2017
Order #: 145003327
Date Shipped: 05/17/2017
Shipment #: 100003309
Sold To: Streakwave Wireless

Now our records indicate:
Mfg Date: 2/21/2017
MAC: EC:13:B2:81:C2:DA
Model: WS-12-250-DC
Board Rev: F
Board Serial #: 148964-1383
Power Supply Serial #: 148966-0150
Location: Netonix
Tech Op: Eric
Destination: US
Firmware Version: 1.4.2

Picture info:
MAC: EC:13:B2:81:C2:DA
Power Supply Serial #: 148966-0150 <== MATCH
Board Serial #: 162954-0805 <== DOES NOT MATCH

I'm confused?
Did you buy a replacement board as I can not find this board assigned to any switch?
It is a NEWER board as Rev J originally that switch had a Rev F. Now it would have been serialized as F probably as the differences in Revs is discrete parts no firmware notification needed.

I can fix this, I just want to connect the dots.

Console into the switch:
You can use web UI console
Console cable
SSH with program like putty

once logged into the switch copy and paste the below into the console
Hit enter if needed to force reboot

cmd
cat<<EOF>cfgfile
MAC=EC:13:B2:81:C2:DA
MODEL=WS-12-DC
BOARDREV=F
SERIAL=0
EOF
mtd write cfgfile config
reboot

That did it - seems fixed and no more identity crisis.
HOWEVER - there are still missing functionality - as it works as a DC switch without the smart PS - WS-12-DC not WS-12-250-DC !

Next - I will try to do the same but with the string "WS-12-250-DC" in the config...

==============

I have no idea what happened.
I got this from our field-team with the complaint that it's it's thinking that it's an AC switch.

When you asked me to open and take photos of the inside, I realized that there is no warranty sticker!
So it must have been opened before?

But I'm fairly certain we never purchased a replacement board..

It's very possible this unit was sent back to you for repair, or something like that...

Update - using the string "WS-12-250-DC" fixed the switch completely.
It's going back to circulation...

Thanks!

Yahel.
