Tried this on one of our switches. Been stuck on 'Begin transfer of recovery file .....

The .tar file is an archive not sure if that might have an effect on the process. When i unpack it, i get two files mtd and switch. My conclusion, either the switch is proper faulty or an issue with the .tar file.

Thanks wesley,

Yeah if the recovery.tar.gz file is in an archive, like a zip or whatever it might be. It could affect the process. Try decompressing it and try again. All the file transfers are over xmodem, so when it arrive's on the switch it will still be in the same state and the commands that run after aren't expecting it to be in an archive other than the tar.gz

Hopefully that helps.

**EDIT**
I think I may have mis-understood what you meant originally. It should definitely be sent in it's .tar.gz form - Try downloading it again from the original link at the beginning of the page.

Something else you can try too to verify that part is working. Just do it manually,
If you have access to the original HyperTerminal or any serial console that can use xmodem, just connect to the switch and type the commands:
Code: Select all
cd /tmp
rx recovery.tar.gz

Then while the switch is waiting, send the file. If that works, reboot the switch. Then wait about 3 minutes and run the tool again.
I did see things like that happen in my original test's, it should have been weeded out, but depending on the state of your switch. It might have missed a few of the commands the tool sent in the beginning.

If that doesn't work, then yeah the switch might be truly faulty.

Hello Stephen

The recovery did not work today

Techs noted that the transfer time was at least 4 times longer

speculated that the baud rate for the console port was too slow

should 115200

cable guy, thanks for getting back.

The baud is locked at 115200.

How far did the tool get?

I'm wondering if perhaps it might be a similar issue to what is happening to wesley.

Hi!
I tried it on a switch that after a prolonged power cut, did not wake up.

The tool reached 100%, unplug and plugged in again. Unfortunately it remains the same.

So quick update, I have managed to replicate this issue. The tool works most of the time. However, when it is stuck in redboot sometimes the timing is off a bit and it causes this to happen. I will have an update soon to correct this.

Netonix Serial Recovery Tool v1.0.1 released!

This should fix the issue some have been encountering where the recovery tool just runs forever and never complete's sending the recovery.tar.gz, or sometimes it makes it through the entire process but when it's finished - nothing happens.

Let me know if this is working for you now and if it does I'll start working on the Linux release.

Hi Stephen. Thanks for the new tool. Im just trying it.
Just 2 questions:

1) Im using a usb-serial converter and then a female adapter to plug in the switch, that should work? Or I need a null (female) serial cable without any adapters?
2) When the progress is over? The 100% is complete but the little points are moving. I have to wait something else?

Thanks in advance.

Hello FSod,

For your first question, it's easy to test if the cable will work. Just run PuTTY, HyperTerminal, etc and connect to the switch, if you can access the terminal from the switch then the tool should function.

For the second question, can you send a screenshot?
