Fan Failed?

Mon Oct 19, 2015 8:26 am

I got an alert this morning that the fan was failing on one of my WS-250-AC units. Researching this, I see where Chris suggested updating the firmware and see if it helps. The switch was running 1.3.2. I updated it to 1.3.3. I now see the fan in this state:

It doesn't stay that way - it will go up to 2500 RPM, fluctuate from 1900 RPM to 2500 RPM, then fall back to 0 for a period of time (a few minutes), then jump to 980 RPM, 2700 RPM, and bounce around.

Is this potentially a firmware issue, or is the fan designed to shut down under certain conditions?

Thanks
Sam

The fan only runs when needed and with a board temp of 37C the fan will be OFF.

If the fan is failing it will report so in the LOG.

We changed the fan to run less in newer firmware.

When we first put out the firmware the fan was set to run more aggressively than needed.

Chris,

I received another alert this morning from a different ws-250 about the fan failing. I checked the log on the device and see this:

Oct 16 08:45:02 switch[1341]: Fan 1 is failing
Oct 16 08:45:02 sSMTP[3938]: Creating SSL connection to host
Oct 16 08:45:06 sSMTP[3938]: SSL connection using DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA
Oct 16 08:45:08 sSMTP[3938]: Sent mail for sam@up.com
Oct 22 09:45:07 switch[1341]: Fan 1 is failing
Oct 22 09:45:08 sSMTP[3022]: Creating SSL connection to host
Oct 22 09:45:17 sSMTP[3022]: SSL connection using DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA
Oct 22 09:45:18 sSMTP[3022]: Sent mail for sam@up.com

Should I go ahead and swap out this unit (and any others that do this), or could these be cosmetic? The firmware on the unit is 1.3.3, Board Rev D.

Thanks Chris!
Sam

These are false fan failures.

Unless you see the Fan RPM of 0 with a board temp over 50C then that is a real alert

We will address false fan errors again in v1.3.5
