POE OPTIONS BY MODEL

Fri Mar 13, 2015 12:13 pm

I have not done a great job explaining the POE options. I will be updating the PDFs and Model descriptions over the next week but here is a better explanation for now.

So for those that are wondering how to power an AF5X without being on the edge of the Poly Fuse just plug it into a port that supports 48VH but select 24V in the UI / CLI and you still get the higher rated Poly Fuse on that port which is .75A or 18 Watts constant draw as people that have the AF5X running on our switches have already reported the current draw at less than 15 Watts PEAK.

Click HERE to go to another post with more details on AF5X current consumption.

May I know what does "being on the edge of the Poly Fuse" mean?

What about the pins & the series of numbers, e.g. "Pins 4,5" mean?

Well a .5A Poly Fuse is rated at 12 watts when using it at 24V.

Poly fuses have a gray area as to when they will trip since they do so by heat just like a breaker in your house except these reset themselves so if they trip they are not dead. Poly fuses can also surge above their rating for short periods of time without tripping.

The AF5X draws current at between 7 to 15 watts as seen below in this graphs from a user powering an AF5X with a WISP Switch. This picture came from THIS post.

As You can see in the 30 second graph which every data point is 1 second the radio draw PEAKS at 14+/- watts draw during its Tx cycle and drops to 7 watts during the Rx cycle.

Now if you look at the 5 minute graph which averages 10 of the 1 second collected data points for a 10 second average current draw the draw becomes more flat at between 7 to 12 watts average constant draw.

Now if you look at the 1 hour graph which averages 120 of the 1 second collected data points for a 120 second average current draw the draw becomes more flat at between 9+/- watts average constant draw which is below the .5A/12W Poly Fuse and then would come down to how warm is the board/environment because remember a Poly Fuse trips when it gets too warm.

So with the current WISP Switch models out there if you plug an AF5X into a port that is rated for 48VH those Poly Fuses are rated at .75A or 18 watts at 24V.

Now with the new WS-6-MINI, WS-8-250-XX, WS-12-250-XX we upgraded all the Poly Fuses to .75A across the board so you can just plug the AF5X into any standard 24V port.

The WS-12-250A&B and WS-24-400A&B rack mount models those board have .5A Poly Fuses but their boards are so large and they have excellent airflow that the board temp stays pretty cool even in hot environments so a 24V standard port should be fine but if you do not like being that close to the edge just plug the AF5X into a port capable of 48VH and you have .75A at 24V standard.

The pins are not really pins but the position on the connector is often referred to as pinout.

interesting comment about the 0.7 amp rating...I can only guess that they are referring to the transformer rating because they only have 0.5 amp fuses in the tough switch..at least the tough switch i have...

That is good supporting info WRT what the AF5X requires. I noticed a typo I made (4 pins, not pairs) in the thread and corrected it.

I see Salvador back peddled a little on what current the TS is capable of and did not see any distinction between the TS5 and TS8-Pro. Also keep in mind that the TS8-Pro has a very weak 48to24 voltage converter so you cannot power very many 24V devices.

Having tried the Netonix switch who would use a TS8-Pro anymore ?

Will the AF5x select 1 gig, with the standard 24 volt Netonix port selected, or will it only select 100 Mbps port due to the DC wiring configuration ?
