IGMP Snooping Not Working [WS-6-MINI]

Wed Jul 12, 2017 6:05 pm

I'm experimenting with my IPTV setup, and it appears IGMP Snooping is not working on my WS-6-MINI running 1.4.7. Running a multicast stream into one port replicates the stream to all other ports regardless of whether they are members of the stream. I have done nothing fancy, it is just at defaults with "IGMP Snooping" checked [on].

Is there anything else I need to do to enable IGMP Snooping?

I hope to do some testing with IGMP Snooping using VLANs, but I want to get the basics working first.

Thank you, Chris

Well I would load the latest v1.4.8rcX as v1.4.7 is no longer in development.

If it still does not work then you need to post up all your screen TABs and a detailed description.
Eric (the programmer) or another user that is using IGMP will have to assist as I do not use that feature in my WISP but as I understand it that feature was fixed and has been confirmed to work.

I will test as you have suggested, and follow up here.

It is my practice to avoid "release candidates" in my production network because they are usually considered higher risk than a "stable" firmware. Should this usually hold true with your firmware?

Short answer, no. internal test builds are lettered, and not released. The RC nomenclature is a bit misleading in our case, i should apologize. 1.4.8rc7 is the current stable build.

FOr us the RC means that is the current version being developed.

If we stop development of v1.4.8 tomorrow and the next day someone reports a bug we release v1.4.9rc1

So v1.4.8rc7 has all the bugs reported in v1.4.7 fixed plus some new requested features

Thank you for the clarification regarding your "rc" designation. I might suggest considering a different designation for the most active non-test firmware since most often I find "rc" is not something that should be considered for active use.

IGMP Snooping is not working correctly still [but perhaps I am missing something in the configuration].

I installed 1.4.8rc7.

I reset the switch to defaults.

I connected ports as follows:
1 - Multicast feed (1.5 Mbps)
2 - X Disconnected
3 - X Disconnected
4 - Dummy MikroTik port
5 - Dummy MikroTik port
6 - Streaming Device

In this configuration, total Rx reads approx 1.5 Mbps and total Tx reads approx 4.5 Mbps. This is expected behavior with IGMP Snooping turned off (feeds are replicated to all active ports, 3 in this case).

Then, I activated IGMP Snooping. This is the only change I made from defaults. When this setting is made, since I only have one device picking the stream, total Tx and total Rx should match at 1.5 Mbps, but they do not. The throughput remains the same as with IGMP Snooping disabled. I rebooted the switch and this remained the same.

Is there anything that should be done other than activating IGMP Snooping for it to work?

Thank you, Chris

You may have to completely stop and start the streaming (possibly even completely restarting both client and server programs). If IGMP snooping isn't enabled when the session starts it can't do its thing.

I'm not sure I follow this.

I can't stop the multicast feed program, I can only disconnect it (which I have tried). It will stop completely if I disable the client as a result of having no subscriptions at that time, and then I can start it again by activating the client.

I have a UniFi switch with IGMP Snooping enabled. If I pull the plugs out of the Netonix and put them straight into the UniFi in the same order (while everything is running), it works as expected (Multicast stream is only sent to the subscribed ports). Move it back to the Netonix and it behaves as a broadcast.

What is the purpose of the multicast check box for each port?

Is there a functioning example you have that I can follow or a customer with functioning IGMP Snooping on Netonix you can refer me to?

Unchecking the multicast checkbox will not allow multicast packets on that port.

Is the multicasting happening on a VLAN?
